Mind-Body-Fitness Implications
Dec 11th, 2006 by Jessica Dawn
Challenge yourself by lifting weights, you’ll get stronger. Stick to your cardio workouts and you’ll improve your heart & lungs. It’s that simple. Your body adapts to the physical demands you place upon it.
But how does your body respond to the muscle between your ears? It’s proven scientifically that whats going on in your brain has an effect on your body, your health, and your performance. So how can we use this information to reach top levels of health, fitness, and vitality?
I know I used to wish I was born to look like a movie star, or model. I never thought it was fair that they were so thin, and beautiful and they made it look so easy! Haven’t you wished your brain could be “wired” to deliver, weight loss, health, & stress reduction, just like your friends who are natural “tooth-picks” who can eat whatever they want?
It’s true, your brain holds the key to getting all the health & fitness benefits your looking for. If you want to eat cleaner, work out harder, and be healthier, you must train your brain. Your brain has tremendous potential to influence the body. In fact there are currently far reaching implications and ongoing studies to prove just how powerful the mind-body connection really is.
To prove this simple connection, simply imagine yourself cutting open a lemon and biting into it, go ahead and close your eyes and imagine eating a lemon. If you do it, your mouth will begin to water! It’s just a simple test, but it shows how much the images in our mind influence the responses of the body. If you are hoping to transform your entire physique, or your looking to get the most out of your workouts, you can follow these few tips to train your brain.
Visualize
Whether you realize it or not, your mind is constantly offering you images in response to what you are thinking about. In order to produce positive results through visualizing, you must first make a decision about what you want to achieve, and then create a picture of it in your mind. It’s scientifically proven that visualizing produces a response from the body.
Simply imagining doing a workout can produce results—recent research found that people who imagined exercising their finger or elbow flexor muscles for 15 minutes a day, five days a week, improved their strength by 13 to 35 percent. Numerous studies exist on this subject which imply that the highest performing athelets are the ones who spent time visualizing. While casually watching sports, I have noted quite a few NBA, NFL, & MLB stars who talk openly about visualizing themselves as super-stars playing professional ball.
Positive Self-Talk
You can use positive self-talk at any time, and especially when your working out. Find words to encourage, inspire, and motivate you during the last leg of your workout. Or if you wake up in the morning feeling sort-of bloated, you can use positive self-talk to talk yourself into feeling healthy, vibrant, and full of energy. Don’t overlook this simple success tool!
Develop a Healthy Self-Image
How you feel about yourself really matters. It affects your performance and abilities each and every day. If you want to do your best, you must embrace a successful vision of the healthy, fit person you want to be- inside your mind!
If you’ve read much of this blog, you’ll remember I shared how crucial your self-image or “inner world” is to life-long weight loss and fitness. It’s a simple concept to talk about, but not always so easy to apply.
Research is coming out every day supporting the mind-body connection. We’ve all heard the bit about using only a small percentage of our brain power (2-5%), but I never gave it much attention, and I never thought it had anything to do with health & fitness. But, something struck me when I started hearing about the mind-body connection. I already knew there were obvious connections between self-esteem, body image, and body weight, but as I read more about the mind body connection I was really amazed. My questions lead me to study the brain & behavior, how the brain works, and what it meant to my health, and my daily life.
You might be thinking, what do brainwaves have to do with fitness, weight loss, and health? Why does it matter that I’m using 2-5% of my brain power?
The truth is, the most powerful part of your brain,is the part we don’t really use! The other 95-98% is the powerful part of your brain that holds your self-image in place, and controls your habitual behavior.
When you access your deeper mind, it’s called the Alpha state–and it’s not what you
think–Only in recent decades have we discovered the remarkable brain wave patterns that form our inner being. In the Alpha state, you are relaxed and stress free, if you can access the Alpha state, you can fill your heart with a new sense of health, vitality, and positive statements….and it’s no secret that stress is detrimental to your health.
When I found out about the Alpha state, I was shocked! I never valued relaxation & positive self-talk much until I learned just how beneficial it could be. But I had to admit that it was all beginning to make sense now.
For the longest time I thought my ‘hurry-up, let’s just do it’ attitude was the way to go. I assumed that forcing myself to diet, workout till I dropped, and
stay away from all the “bad” foods was the way to lose weight. But I was wrong!
All I was doing was using that measely 2-5% of my brainpower to fight against the powerful 95-98%. Those high level brain waves (2-5%)–known as Beta–are
getting a real bad rap these days. I found out the true wealth of an individual’s peak performance is in those darned Alpha waves.
It took me about 5-6 years to finally reach my fitness goals, b/c I never knew about these little brainwaves. I always had a vision of what I wanted
to look like, but I could not make it happen! Then, I learned something new, that made me feel empowered like never before. What I learned can help you too!
When you choose to fill your mind with supportive thoughts and ideas, you will find that your body’s quest for health & fitness will move forward at rapid speed.
You see, the mind is the ‘heart’ of all that occurs in the body. When your mind is aligned with your desires, your body can respond to fulfill them.
